Missy Meatlocker
Thanks to a certain Deschanel (of the acting Deschanels), the ukulele has a tendency to make eyeballs roll in 2014. If anyone can salvage your idea of this Hawaiian instrument, it’s Missy. Her uke covers are mellow and devoid of any sort of irony, making her show the perfect Monday concert for folks whose heads are still to cloudy to sort through layers of pretension.

Raw Power (w/ Wartorn, The Pallbearers and Split Lips)
If you have the kind of friends who will poke fun at you for vibing out with a uke player, use this excellent showcase of crust and hardcore to wipe that smirk off their face. Italian hardcore legends Raw Power headline a night featuring several of NOLA’s loudest (and one of Appleton, Wisconsin’s, too!)

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (w/ Stagnant Pools)
Story time, folks. I’ve seen CYHSY thrice in concert and not once was it on purpose. These early blog darlings had an uncanny ability to open for bands I wanted to see while I was living in Tampa for a stint. However, every single time they played the opening slot in the 813, there was this one couple who showed up in homemade t-shirts, pushed their way up to the stage and reacted “Satan Said Dance” like it was the second coming of Jesus Christ.
This is a band capable of inspiring true devotion is what I’m saying and that’s certainly worth 15 dollars on a Tuesday night.

The Holy Ghost Electric Show (w/ Mississippi Shakedown)
The last few years have seen a proliferation of so-called folk that’s about as down-home and authentic as a $70 pair of suspenders from Urban Outfitters. HGES is not one of those bands. This is a band from Oxford, MS that sounds like the song you hear in your head when someone says “Oxford, Mississippi.”

Little Radar, The Ink Sea
Little Radar has a music video where they throw a giant fully clothed party at the bottom of a swimming pool. Folks ride bicycles, rock out and toast with solo cups filled with nothing but chlorinated water. The accompanying music sounds like Superchunk for the youths. It’s August, you need this.

The Mind Of Mannie Fresh
For anyone who needs a history lesson on New Orleans hip-hop, do not miss this showcase of the Crescent City’s biggest producer. On top of the Man(nie) himself, “Mind of…” will feature Drumma Boy and New York Incorporated -a group that includes Mannie and the First Lady of No Limit, Mia X. In an interesting stylistic clash, D.C. funk and go-go icons Trouble Funk will also perform. Check out Drumma Boy with C Good and Young Buck’s video for “Action.”
